Scenario
Clare Beauchamp Randall, a World War II nurse, mysteriously travels back in time to 1743 Scotland. There, she meets a brave Highland warrior and is drawn into an epic rebellion. Moore (the developer of the television series), his team decided to keep the Gaelic words instead of translating them into English. This keeps the narrative in first person by showing Clare’s inability to understand Gaelic.
The theme song changes from season to season to reflect what is happening in the storyline
This idea was suggested by producer David Brown, who said he saw something similar in Skin Deep (1998), an alternative foreign film starring actor and singer Gustavo Goular. In several episodes, the characters say “OK.”; an American term that did not come into use until the 19th century. In the first half of season 2 (which is set in France), some of the lyrics are in French. In the second half of Season 2 (which is mostly about preparing for war), a militaristic drum is added to the opening song.
Featured in Outlander: An Epic Adaptation (2015)
In Season 3, tribal drums are added as much of the season is set in the West Indies. Bluegrass fiddle and banjo are added in Season 4, and some lyrics are sung in a Southern accent as the season is mostly set in America. I am so glad!
A dear friend who recently passed away from cancer much too young told me to watch it, which I did in her honor. It has it all! The cast is perfect with stellar performances of brutal plots. The locations, the romance, the memorable music, the sets, costumes and props, and the attention to historical detail all left a strong impression on me.
In my opinion, this is much more than just a Harlequin romance and deserves more praise
